Im the author of Pilothouse (http://www.pilothouse-app.org/), which is a free/open source CLI app for managing a Docker-based local development environment, with a focus on WordPress and Laravel development. Wow, Im not in the loop with DS, just know it as one of the more widely-used solutions for local development on Mac but disappointing to hear that theyve dropped the ball. I normally use mamp but used local for first time recently and got some ajax errors pushing the theme to a remote server (database was OK), of course these errors may not be down to local could be plugins etc but just wondered if you knew of anything that might be a problem such as the way local stores the sites in a app folder? Once the install was complete and I found the app that I needed to run (hint for users of Alfred/Spotlight as app launchers: its not called XAMPP, it is intuitively called Application Manager), I couldnt get the server to start up. I like the idea it just works (always on) and is very fast, but not yet convinced that working in a non-sandboxed environment is the way to go? Also a big proponent of Valet; I was tethered to MAMP for several years, and finally decided to cut the chord (so to speak) a couple of years ago. Ive also used Xampp, but Serverpress is supposed to do the requisite find/replace when cloning to a new server. For all the freelance writers out there who use WordPress to make a living, there are very few who relish developing the kind of knowledge it takes to do all this. XAMPP (the "sh" pronunciation of the "X" was a surprise to me, but its hardly unknown, as both Chinese and Mexican Spanish use it) is less user-friendly, but I used it successfully for years. Hey! There were some issues when installing LV due to the old version of Macport and Homebrew. I should have done that initially, rather waste an entire Friday afternoon trying other alternatives. There is a paid version of DesktopServer that adds features like multisite support (hint: you can just convert a site to multisite manually), as well as some utilities and integrations. Ive had far fewer issues and have much deeper control over my local environment without MAMP adding its complexities for the sake of simplicity something that I no longer require. Ive recently discovered Laragon for Window, which has taken all my problems away. Ive been using Laragon for the past year on Windows and have been very impressed with it. You alsohave to name things like databases, and answer questions relating to those names. Youll need to install XAMPP-VM for Mac to be able to install XAMPP addons separately. Flywheel was also recently acquired by WP Engine, so Local is now a WP Engine product. Instant WordPress. I use it on Windows and Mac. Local also supports community developed addons which helps you modify and extend the apps functionality. As a long-time MAMP Pro user, I do wish that DesktopServer had a better site management UI. Installing the Bitnami WordPress stack, on the other hand, is cake. Youll need to go through their application to open the SSH container separately for each site. Setting up a site in Local usually takes 60-90 seconds for me, and using the site feels fast too. You'll need to install XAMPP-VM for Mac to be able to install XAMPP addons separately. This time the server started up as expected. I dont recall any problems setting up Local on Window. After the harrowing install process, I dont have the will to boot up a Windows or Linux VM just to test this out. You can probably chalk this up to MAMPs focus on the Mac platform because the installer looks and feels at home on MacOS. Its a great tool to keep your projects separate on different virtual machines, it handles dev/staging/production environments and after small configuration it is fully automatized. So I gave up on Local. After fighting with Xampp, Mamp (for Windows!) Finally choose Laravel Valet, only because I used Homebrew before. All the others listed are open source. Its been my favorite of all the tools. For example, with XAMP, you have to pick and choose which components you want to install, which means you have to know what they are. Having been around for a long time, I like to mettle, so periodically I clone the site and run it locally using ServerPress to control the server. Recently installed Valet to give it a try (as local doesnt yet work with High Sierra which I rushed into installing on a machine). Sometimes upgrading from version to version can be a little challenging, things change with permissions and things like that between the versions, but Ive been happy with it. Perhaps installing WP the long way, using XAMPP gives you features and control you dont have when you go the Bitnami Route, but I didnt discover what those might be in my research. In general, the DesktopServer UI is a bit weird as its essentially an infinitely looping wizard rather than a traditional app. It is the most complete UI-based local development solution for WordPress developers on the market, and its mind-bogglingly free. Ill give XAMPP the benefit of the doubt and say that maybe the Mac app is just their weak link. Theres an option to uncheck phpMyAdmin if you dont want access to the database. If you are using Mac I would like to recommend Laravel Valet which works great with WordPress. I can launch a WP site on local in about 4mins. WordPress packaged by Bitnami provides a one-click install solution for WordPress. Still figuring it out, but Ill probably get there someday! With PHPStorms built-in terminal, its really easy to run a CLI command on the fly without having to go through the apps UI and opening terminal separately as seen in Local. Ive checked the FollowSymLink in Apache section, but I still get a 403 forbidden error. The issue Ive had with DesktopServer and Local are that they require admin rights to run and in a corporate environment where designers and developers dont usually have the permanent admin rights, this is a showstopper. You can also easily switch between different versions of PHP, a number of PHP versions are included in the application but you can always download additional versions through their built-in installer. In my research the main advice is SSD (of course) and Not Windows 10 because of bloatness and notorious for background services. If I were working on a Windows operating system, which I might do at some point, and probably even if I were starting from scratch today, Local would be the obvious choice. Though you can also find the Perl command line tool optionally available in MAMP Pro. It's a great resource for anyone who wants to get detailed info on branding, target audience, and goals from their new customers. However, with MAMP Pro, you get a package installer for WordPress (and other apps) which really makes it easy to create a site in seconds. FYI There are also tabs for Manage Servers where you can see that MySQL and Apache are both running. I chalked this up to the fact that I already had MAMP and Local installed on that machine and there was probably some conflict. On the Bitnami WordPress Stack page- click on Next.
